Waking up to a new day, free from jaw pain and headaches

Have you ever woken up in the morning, expecting to feel refreshed and ready to take on the day, only to be greeted by a throbbing headache or a painful jaw? If so, you’re not alone. Many of our general dentistry Stockwell patients have shared similar experiences, and we understand how debilitating it can be. It’s not just about the physical discomfort, but also the impact it has on your mood, productivity, and overall quality of life.

general-dentistry-stockwell

the connection between jaw pain and headaches

The first thing to understand is that jaw pain and headaches, especially in the morning, are often interconnected. The culprit is usually a condition known as temporomandibular joint disorder, or TMJ for short. This is a disorder that affects the joint connecting your jaw to the sides of your skull. When this joint is strained or damaged, it can lead to a variety of symptoms, including jaw pain, headaches, difficulty chewing, and even a clicking sound when you open and close your mouth.

why does it get worse in the morning?

Now, you might be wondering why these symptoms are often worse in the morning. The answer lies in our sleep patterns and habits. Many people, often without realising it, clench their jaws or grind their teeth while they sleep. This is a condition known as bruxism, and it puts a lot of strain on the TMJ, leading to inflammation and pain. The prolonged period of clenching or grinding during the night can result in heightened pain and discomfort in the morning.

so.. how we can help

We believe in a holistic approach to treating TMJ disorders and bruxism. We understand that every general dentistry Stockwell patient is unique, and so are their symptoms and experiences. That’s why we take the time to listen to your concerns, understand your lifestyle, and conduct a thorough examination before proposing a treatment plan.

For some, the solution could be as simple as a custom-made mouthguard to wear at night, which can help protect the teeth and alleviate the strain on the jaw. For others, it might involve a combination of physical therapy, pain management, and lifestyle changes. In some cases, we might also recommend exploring stress management techniques.

taking the first step towards relief

If you’re tired of waking up to jaw pain and headaches, we’re here to help. We invite you to schedule a consultation with us, where we can discuss your symptoms, answer your questions, and start working on a treatment plan that’s tailored to your needs. Remember, you don’t have to live with the pain. With the right help and treatment, you can wake up to a new day, free from jaw pain and headaches.

The power of prevention

Prevention is better than cure and nowhere is this truer than in dental care. The cornerstone of maintaining a healthy mouth lies in the daily rituals that most of us perform without a second thought.

Regular brushing removes the plaque that builds up on your teeth, which, if left unchecked, can lead to tooth decay and gum disease. Flossing, on the other hand, reaches the nooks and crannies that your toothbrush can’t, ensuring a thorough clean. Regular dental check-ups are your safety net, catching any potential issues early before they escalate into more serious problems.

The role of diet in dental health

What you eat plays a substantial role in your oral health. A diet high in sugars and acids can wreak havoc on your teeth, leading to cavities and erosion. On the flip side, a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and dairy can strengthen your teeth and gums, making them more resistant to decay and disease.

Here at our clinic, we believe in a holistic approach to general dentistry Stockwell. We don’t just treat your teeth; we guide you on the path to overall oral health, which includes advising you on the best dietary practices for maintaining a healthy mouth.

The importance of regular dental check-ups

Many people underestimate the importance of their regular dental check-ups. They view them as optional, something to be done when a problem arises. But this couldn’t be further from the truth. Regular check-ups are our opportunity to assess the health of your mouth, identify any potential issues, and catch them early before they become major problems.

During these visits, we don’t just look at your teeth. We examine your gums, your tongue, and the inside of your mouth. We look for any signs of oral cancer, gum disease, and other conditions that could affect your oral health. These check-ups are an essential part of your dental care routine, and skipping them could have serious consequences for your oral health.

The promise of your local dental clinic

As part of your community, we promise to be more than just your dental care providers. We will be your educators, your advisors, and your partners in health. We will work tirelessly to ensure that you have all the information and tools you need to maintain a healthy mouth and a radiant smile.

Remember, your smile is our pride. And with general dentistry Stockwell we are committed to safeguarding it, one check-up at a time. So, let’s embark on this journey together, and let’s make every smile a testament to the power of good dental care.

The importance of crowns and fillings in general dentistry

We often find ourselves in awe of the intricate artistry that goes into general dentistry Stockwell. It’s a world that goes unnoticed by many, hidden behind the simple act of a smile. Yet, it’s a world that holds the power to transform lives, restore confidence, and bring back the joy of a hearty laugh. Today, we invite you to join us on a journey through this fascinating world, as we explore crowns and fillings, the original dental restorations.

general-dentistry-stockwell

The magic behind your smile: crowns and fillings//

Crowns and fillings are the unsung heroes of dental restoration. They are the silent guardians that stand between you and the pain of a decaying tooth, the discomfort of a broken molar, or the embarrassment of a missing incisor. They are the invisible architects that shape your smile, the silent sculptors that carve your confidence.

On the other hand, dental fillings are used to patch damage to the structure of a tooth that may have been caused by decay, wear, or trauma. They literally ‘fill’ a hole in your tooth, preventing further decay and strengthening the tooth.

The journey of a tooth from decay to restoration

The journey of a tooth from decay to restoration is a tale of resilience and renewal. It begins with the onset of decay, a silent enemy that slowly eats away at the tooth’s structure. If left untreated, decay progresses, leading to severe toothache, infection, and even tooth loss.

But this is where crowns and fillings come to the rescue. Once the decayed portion of the tooth is removed during a procedure known as a ‘filling’, a special dental material is then used to fill the cavity, restoring the tooth’s structure and function.

In cases where the tooth decay is extensive, a crown may be needed. The decayed or damaged tooth is prepared, an impression is taken, and a custom-made crown is placed over the tooth, restoring its shape, size, strength, and appearance.

The art and science of dental restoration

General dentistry Stockwell is a delicate balance of art and science. It requires a deep understanding of dental anatomy, mastery of dental materials, and a keen eye for aesthetics.

As dental practitioners, we are not just treating teeth; we are restoring smiles, rebuilding confidence, and improving quality of life. Every crown we place, every filling we complete, is a testament to our commitment to our patient’s health and happiness.

The promise of a healthy smile

At SW9 Dental, we believe in the power of a healthy smile. We understand that crowns and fillings are more than just dental restorations; they are a promise of a healthier, happier future.

So, whether you need a simple filling, a complex crown, or just a routine check-up, we are here for you, meeting your general dentistry Stockwell needs. We are more than just your local dental clinic; we are your partners in the journey towards a healthier, brighter smile.

So, the next time you smile, remember the artistry that goes into that simple act. Remember SW9 Dental is always here to ensure that your smile remains as healthy and attractive as ever.

General dentistry in Stockwell: preventing and treating gum disease

Here at SW9 Dental, we work hard to help our patients enjoy good oral health and the best possible smile; and offer a range of treatments that can help with both. Gum disease is surprisingly common, and often has a range of negative effects. Here, we discuss what it is and the impact it can have. We also delve into how it can be prevented, before talking about some of the treatments we can offer to mitigate gum disease.

general-dentistry-stockwell

What is gum disease?

Gum disease is an issue that crops up often within general dentistry in Stockwell. It is a condition whereby the gums become swollen and inflamed, which can cause them to be sore and to bleed on occasion. It can cause the patient to develop a bad taste in their mouth, and consequently, bad breath. Gum disease that is left untreated can result in the loss of one or several teeth.

As well as causing the health of a person’s mouth to decline, which can undermine their confidence and make them feel self-conscious about their appearance, gum disease also affects general health. The mouth is quite literally the gateway to the rest of the body, so it makes sense that if it is not in good condition, then other areas will be impacted. Research has shown that people with gum disease are increasingly likely to suffer from respiratory and cardiovascular problems, as well as have a much greater risk of developing conditions such as dementia and arthritis.

How can it be prevented?

Keeping the teeth and gums scrupulously clean is a key part of general dentistry in Stockwell and is one of the best ways to protect oneself against gum disease. At home, the patient should ensure that they get into a regular routine of brushing their teeth morning and evening using a fluoride toothpaste.

The brushing should last for two minutes. Less than two minutes may not be enough time to ensure that the teeth are thoroughly clean, and more than that can damage the protective layer of enamel that sits on the surface of the teeth. It is also important to floss once a day too. If that is not easy for the patient, they may have more success using interdental brushes. If in any doubt, we encourage our patients to talk to us and ask about the best tools and techniques to use.

We also recommend that our patients see our hygienist every six months for a professional clean. This helps to get rid of any plaque that has remained after brushing and flossing and helps to keep the gums healthy.

Treatments for gum disease

If a patient does develop gum disease, there are lots of ways that we can help to treat it and return them to good oral health. These include cleaning, scaling and root planing and surgical treatments. On some occasions we prescribe antibiotics to mitigate an infection within the gums. There are also specific mouthwashes and toothpastes that we can recommend as treatment for gum disease. Anyone who is worried that they may have this condition should consult with us to find out the best course of treatment.

General dentistry in Stockwell: what is preventive dentistry?

Here at SW9 Dental, we are advocates of preventive dentistry as well as providers of a wide choice for treatments that help our patients to get the best possible smile. Preventive dentistry is instrumental in helping to maintain oral health and can mean that patients are less likely to need to undergo procedures such as fillings, implants and treatments for gum disease. Here, we explain what preventive dentistry means and what it involves, as well as why it is so important.

general-dentistry-stockwell

What is preventive dentistry?

Preventive care is a big part of general dentistry in Stockwell. It is all about taking good care of the teeth and gums, both at home and at the surgery. This helps to maximise oral health and can allow the patient to enjoy better general health too. Preventive dentistry also helps our patients to feel more confident about their appearance, as it allows them to maintain the best possible smile.

Taking care at home

General dentistry in Stockwell always involves the recommendation that patients take care to establish a regular dental hygiene routine at home. This means brushing the teeth twice every day using a toothpaste that contains fluoride. It is also important to floss or use interdental brushes once per day. Doing this helps to get rid of plaque or remaining food debris that has not been possible to reach using the toothbrush.

Check-ups

Making regular appointments with us for check-ups is an important part of preventive care. It is possible to be in the early stages of developing a cavity or gum disease but for the patient to have no awareness of this. This is where we come in, as we can identify any potential issues right from the start, which means that there will be minimal treatment required and they can easily be resolved.

Visit the hygienist

The hygienist’s role is to give the teeth and gums a thorough clean, the likes of which is impossible to achieve at home. No matter how vigilant the patient is with maintaining a good oral care routine at home, there will always be areas that are difficult if not impossible to reach and keep clean. The hygienist removes plaque that can cause the deterioration of the teeth, and the professional clean is excellent for removing staining too. This means that the patient can enjoy healthier and more attractive teeth for longer.

Mouth cancer screening

We offer mouth cancer screening as an important part of our preventive care. Mouth cancer is something that should be identified as early as possible in order to start treatment and prevent it from spreading to other parts of the body. We assess the risk of the patient by examining the mouth for signs of any bumps or lesions, and also by using a special screening device.

Stop smoking

Smoking is well known to be a cause of declining oral health. It stains the teeth and can hasten the deterioration of the gums, often resulting in gum disease and sometimes more serious conditions like mouth cancer. We offer advice and support to our patients in stopping smoking, which is one of the best things they can do to look after their teeth and gums as well as their general health.

Get your smile back together

general-dentistry-stockwell

At SW9 Dental we know that the last year has been one of unprecedented challenges and obstacles and that many people’s oral wellbeing has suffered as a result.

Our committed dentists never pass judgement over our patients, regardless of the shape their oral health is in or the amount of time that has passed since their last dental visit.

Anyone who thinks that their smile would benefit from general dentistry in Stockwell should contact us at their earliest convenience and arrange for a consultation with one of our friendly, approachable dentists.

What does general dentistry in Stockwell involve?

General dentistry covers far more treatments and procedures than you may think. When people consider general dentistry in Stockwell, there is often a tendency to assume that it purely revolves around extractions or fillings.

These are two routine treatments which we do carry out on a regular basis, but they are not the only things that our general dentists are qualified to do.

At SW9 Dental we’ve always believed that taking a bespoke, patient-centered approach to the dental service we offer is the best way to achieve lasting, positive results.

For this reason, we always try to carry out a consultation prior to beginning any treatment. These consultations give us an opportunity to detail exactly what treatments are on offer, and how they can help.

Our general dentist is trained in various different procedures but the main treatments include: root canal therapy, treating jaw problems, oral surgery & extractions, stopping snoring, treating pregnant women and facial aesthetics.

What are facial aesthetics?

Anyone who wants a non-surgical way to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles will be glad to hear that our practitioners here at SW9 Dental are more than well equipped to provide a range of facial aesthetic treatments.

One of the best things about receiving facial aesthetic treatments from us here at SW9 Dental is that our practitioners have a thorough and professional understanding of facial anatomy and which muscles to treat in order to achieve the best results.

At SW9 Dental we use type A botulinum toxin as it is one of the most effective ways of freezing muscle contractions within your face and making your skin appear smoother and more youthful.

What does botulinum treatment involve?

Botulinum injections – or Botox – are massively popular across the globe thanks to their non-surgical approach and speedy effectiveness.

When undergoing botulinum treatment our highly-trained practitioners simply inject a solution containing the botulinum into the tiny facial muscles which cause wrinkles.

Once injected, this botulinum blocks the nerve impulses to these muscles, which results in them appearing smoother and more youthful.

Some of the most popular areas that our patients often receive botulinum treatment includes crows feet, forehead lines, nasolabial folds, and frown lines.

This sort of facial aesthetic treatment is completely painless, and can be completed in as short a timeframe as 10-15 minutes.

Once the injections have been completed the results will be visible after 4-7 days and will last for anywhere between 3-6 months depending on the extent of the treatment.

If you’d like to find out more on how botulinum facial aesthetic treatments could help you regain your self-confidence then contact us today and arrange to speak with an expert.

Brushing up on how general dentistry in Stockwell could improve your oral health

Get your smile back

general-dentistry-in-stockwell

At SW9 Dental we’ve always strived to provide patients a dedicated dental service, with a smile. We recognise that many people’s oral health may not be as good as it once was, in the wake of a hectic and turbulent year – which is why we urge anyone who needs it to contact us about general dentistry in Stockwell and book a consolation.

What is general dentistry in Stockwell?

Many people assume that all general dentistry in Stockwell entails is pulling out teeth or putting in fillings. While we certainly do this on a regular basis at SW9 Dental, these are by no stretch the only thing that our general dentist does.

Rather than focusing on how your teeth look, our general dentist is primarily concerned with how healthy your smile is. Therefore they provide a wide range of treatment to anyone who needs it which aims to preserve their oral health and keep patients smiling for as long as possible.

As no two patients are the same, the level of care which is required varies on a case-to-case basis, but on the whole, the main treatments that our general dentist provides include treating jaw problems, snoring, pregnant woman, extractions, facial aesthetic treatment such as anti-wrinkle injections or dermal fillers, and root canal therapy.

What is root canal therapy?

Root canal therapy is a restorative treatment that our highly trained general dentist regularly provides to patients here at SW9 Dental. Also known as endodontics, root canal therapy is a treatment that is designed to remove the infected pulp from the interior of a patient’s tooth and restore it to working order.

Your teeth are made up of two main parts – the crown (which is the bit you see) and the root (which is inside your gums). If your tooth is damaged or decayed then bacteria can develop inside the tooth and infect the pulp – which is the name for the connective tissues which run along from the crown to the end of the tooth.

When this pulp is infected it can spread throughout the patient’s mouth to their other teeth, or become an abscess which may result in a need for the tooth to be extracted. However, to avoid this eventuality and preserve the tooth’s life, patients who have infected pulp can opt to have it removed by one of our highly trained endodontic dentists- through root canal therapy.

What does root canal therapy involve?

The process of removing infected pulp from the interior of a patient’s tooth and restoring it to a functioning condition initially starts with the dentist making an opening within the tooth’s crown – while the patient is under local or general anesthetic. Once an opening is made, our dentist will then use what is called an endodontic file to remove all of the infected pulp from inside the tooth. With the pulp removed, the next stage is to re-fill the tooth with a permanent dental filling material called gutta-percha.

Once the canals are filled with this filler material the opening within the tooth is then filled with a dental filling and – in some instances where required – a post is added for extra support. Finally a new crown is added to the top of the tooth and the procedure is complete.
